Harare Man Arrested Over Wife’s Murder as Police Probe Separate Dzivarasekwa Killing

Harare police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the death of his wife at a farm compound in Hatfield, in a case that has renewed attention on how quickly domestic disputes in the capital can turn fatal.

Suspect held after Hatfield incident

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the arrest of Stephen Sarurai in a statement issued on Thursday, 17 September. He is accused of killing his wife, Zvikomborero Tari, 26, at their home at Maruwa Farm Compound.

According to investigators, the woman was strangled with a shoelace during an argument said to have been triggered by accusations of infidelity. Police say the matter is now the subject of a formal murder investigation, and no further details have been released while inquiries continue.

Neighbours at the compound, a densely populated settlement on the north-eastern edge of Harare, described a household that had given little outward sign of the violence that allegedly unfolded behind closed doors. Police have not indicated whether the couple had previously been involved in reported domestic disputes.

Second, unrelated investigation in Dzivarasekwa

In a separate case, detectives in Harare are still working to identify a man whose body was discovered along an unnamed dust road that runs through the Newcastle Group of Schools in Dzivarasekwa.

The body was found on 12 July 2026. Police say the victim had a deep wound above his right eye, scratch marks on both hands, a fractured right leg and swelling on his back.

He was dressed in a grey jacket and grey trousers, a white and navy-blue striped T-shirt, a sun hat, and black and white sneakers. The body is being kept at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals while investigators wait for a family member to come forward and confirm his identity.

What police are asking from the public

Investigators have appealed to anyone with information on either case to approach the nearest police station. In the Dzivarasekwa matter, even a small detail — a missing relative, a familiar item of clothing, or a sighting on the night in question — could help establish who the victim was and how he died.

In the Hatfield case, police say the file will be taken through the normal criminal process once investigations are complete.

A recurring pattern in the capital

Domestic homicide cases rarely appear in isolation, and Harare has recorded several in recent months in which disputes between partners ended in a death. Support groups working on gender-based violence say the majority of such killings are preceded by warning signs, including threats, controlling behaviour and earlier assaults that were never reported.

Zimbabwean law allows police to act on complaints of domestic violence even where the victim has not laid formal charges, and officers have repeatedly urged residents to report abuse early rather than waiting for a situation to escalate. Survivors and witnesses can also seek help through the national gender-based violence helpline, hospitals and community welfare officers.

For residents of high-density and peri-urban settlements such as Maruwa Farm Compound, reporting can be complicated by a lack of nearby police posts and by pressure from relatives to keep family matters private. Community leaders and church groups have in several areas begun acting as intermediaries, accompanying victims to stations and helping them access shelter.
