A catastrophic fire in Chivhu has claimed the lives of at least 30 people, prompting an immediate national response. The President has officially declared a state of disaster following the incident, which occurred late on August 29, 2026.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the intensity of the blaze made rescue efforts impossible. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, though preliminary reports suggest it may have started accidentally.
Local authorities have cordoned off the area as forensic teams work to identify victims and gather evidence. The declaration of a state of disaster allows for the swift mobilisation of resources to support affected families and investigate the tragedy.
This is one of the deadliest fire incidents in Zimbabwe in recent years, and it has renewed calls for stricter safety regulations in residential and public spaces.
