Health authorities in Bulawayo have confirmed that five patients have died at Mpilo Central Hospital after being admitted with a flu-like illness that is currently circulating in the city and surrounding areas. The development has raised concerns among residents as the illness continues to spread.
Rising cases prompt hospital alert
According to hospital sources, the patients presented with symptoms including high fever, persistent cough, body aches and difficulty breathing. While initial reports point to a seasonal influenza strain, laboratory tests are underway to rule out other respiratory infections. The hospital has since activated its infection prevention protocols and is urging the public to seek medical attention early if symptoms appear.
Public urged to take precautions
Health officials are advising residents to practise good hygiene, avoid close contact with sick individuals, and get vaccinated against influenza where possible. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children and people with chronic conditions are being asked to be extra cautious. Schools and workplaces have also been reminded to promote handwashing and proper ventilation.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care is expected to issue a formal statement as surveillance teams monitor the situation in Bulawayo and other provinces. Harare Express will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
